The papers contain correspondence, programs, rosters, legal documents, clippings and miscellany pertaining to the John Powell Foundation and its goal to encourage and promote performances of Powell's muscial compositions. Specific topics include "Sonata Teutonica," particularly its publication, a recording by Roy Hamlin Johnson, and comments by John M. Langstaff; and performances of Powell's works including the premiere of "Symphony in A." There are few papers of Powell himself including a letter to Maud Karpeles, 1954; a guestbook for the "Leschetizky Club of Richmond Memorial Recital"; and piano lessons and exercises. There are also three theses : "John Powell : Folk musician" by Sally Twedell Bagley; "John Powell's piano suites and sonatas 'noble' and 'Psychologique' : a recording project" by Wayne Smith; and "The life and works of John Powell" by Ronald David Ward. Miscellaneous items include the John Powell Foundation's record of the expenses and rosters of the Musicians' Club of Richmond.
